Chaud Time II is the fruit of an interdisciplinary collaboration between Ben Jack Nash and Johanna Nelles which developed during the course of 2023. At its core lies the nature of relationships and the dimensions between the conscious foreground and more subconscious background. However, it also considers the interplay between physical and socio-political material. The photographic images display macro shots of liquid gallium, a metal most commonly found as an industrial by-product. For a previous installation, the gallium was suspended from the ceiling and melted over a period of 12 hours forming a ‘drip painting’ below. What appears to be random and free flowing is in fact the result of a tightly controlled process; the melting rate was linked and influenced by diverse sets of realtime statistical data. They included for example, the litres of air breathed by the artist, the amount of gold mined so far that year or the kilometres of toilet paper used. As the statistics increased in number the gallium grew hotter. The creator is not simply the conscious mind of the artist but also the subconscious hand of events that the artist had little or no control over.
